Engine
3.7-liter, V-6 Engine
The ZDX features Acura's largest engine, which offers a remarkable combination of power, efficiency and refinement.
- The 3.7-liter VTEC® V-6 dishes up 300 horsepower and 270 lbs.-ft. of torque (SAE net).
- Variable valve Timing and lift Electronic Control (VTEC) increases high-rpm horsepower by opening the intake valves deeper and longer when engine speed reaches a designated rpm.
- EPA Economy Rating27 of 16 city / 23 hwy / 19 combined, in tandem with a 21-gallon fuel capacity, gives the ZDX extensive cruising range.
- The Drive-by-Wire™ throttle system varies throttle sensitivity to provide the appropriate throttle response and feel to different driving conditions.
- Lightweight magnesium-alloy cylinder head covers with hardened aluminum cylinder sleeves help improve vehicle balance and the power-to-weight ratio.
- A forged crankshaft results in lower weight and increased strength.
- A high-flow exhaust system increases the engine's power efficiency.
Drivetrain
Sequential SportShift Automatic with Paddle Shifters
The 6-speed Sequential SportShift automatic with paddle shifters gives you the best of both worlds by providing the convenience of precise and intuitive automatic shifting as well as shift-for-yourself control.
- Set the transmission to "Drive" for smooth gear changes with an emphasis on fuel efficiency. Select "Sport" for quicker acceleration, as the transmission allows the engine to rev higher before up-shifting.
- The steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters deliver quick precise shifts at your fingertips.
- Tapping a paddle shifter while in "Drive" brings a quick gear change with automatic operation returning when reaching a steady speed. This allows you to make quick gear changes without changing in and out of manual mode.
- Using a paddle shifter in "Sport" puts the transmission into full manual mode, where you'll have complete control in instances such as high-performance or hilly driving.
- For better climbing or increased downhill engine braking, Grade Logic Control instructs the transmission to hold a lower gear when encountering a steep uphill or downhill grade.
- Shift Hold Control keeps the transmission in its current (lower) gear ratio when the throttle is quickly released and the brakes are applied, such as entry into a tight curve. This leaves the chassis undisturbed by excess shifting.
- Cornering G Shift Control detects vehicle steering by monitoring the rotation of each wheel. If the process of turning is detected, it will suppress an unwanted upshift. This prevents upsetting the chassis balance and avoids the need for an additional downshift when the throttle is applied at the corner exit.
- Hill Start Assist eases starts on inclines. Sensing an uphill grade, the system holds brake pressure momentarily while your foot moves from the brake pedal to the throttle for a smooth, secure start.
Super Handling All-Wheel Drive
Acura developed its revolutionary Super Handling All-Wheel Drive™ (SH-AWD®) system to enhance high-performance dry-road handling. The result is enhanced high-performance cornering that simply can't be matched by front, rear, or conventional all-wheel drive systems. The car feels lighter and smaller, yet it's remarkably stable during high-speed cornering.
- The system continuously determines the optimal level of power distribution between the front and rear wheels, and also between the rear wheels based on an analysis of wheel speed, steering angle, lateral G-force and yaw rate.
- For better fuel efficiency, up to 90% of the power is sent to the front wheels when cruising in a straight line.
- As weight shifts to the rear of the ZDX during hard acceleration, the SH-AWD system transfers up to 45% of engine power to the rear wheels to take advantage of available rear-wheel traction.
- In a curve under hard acceleration, effectively 70% of torque can be directed to the rear-all of which can go to the outside wheel to improve cornering by directing power where weight has shifted.
- The system reduces understeer and increases stability by turning the outside rear wheel slightly faster than the rest of the wheels, rotating the vehicle through the turn.
- The system retains the all-weather attributes of conventional all-wheel drive.
Handling
Suspension Systems
For the best balance of handling precision and ride feel, the front strut and rear multi-link suspensions were designed to accommodate the Super Handling All-Wheel Drive™ system's unique lateral and forward forces.
- The front MacPherson strut design features forged-aluminum lower control arms, aluminum uprights, and other lightweight components for a smoother, more comfortable ride.
- To reduce road noise and vibration, the front system uses fluid-filled bushings, and both the front and multi-link rear systems are mounted on separate subframes.
- The rear system also isolates springs and dampers from lateral forces to maintain composure in hard cornering.
- Thick front and rear stabilizer bars control body roll for flatter cornering.
- Anti-dive properties keep the body stable during braking.
Steering System
Because steering is a key aspect of the driver-vehicle relationship, Acura engineers spent considerable time raising the quality of the rack-and-pinion steering feedback.
- The torque-sensing power-assist system varies the level of effort at varying speeds so that steering is firm at high speeds, yet easy and precise in the parking lot.
- The steering system has been finessed to relay the subtle steering feedback that drivers look for when negotiating curves and other steering maneuvers.
Performance Braking
The brake system is engineered to provide best-in-class braking capability in dry, wet and icy conditions. It is also tuned to provide the precise modulation necessary for the utmost confidence during spirited driving.
- The ventilated front discs measure 13 inches in diameter and are gripped by dual-piston, cast-iron calipers.
- The solid rear discs are 13.2 inches with single-piston, cast-iron calipers.
- To satisfy the enthusiast driver, the brake pedal feel is firm with short brake pedal travel.
Rigid Body Structure
A rigid body structure is essential for a smooth ride, precise handling and a quiet cabin. The ZDX achieves a high level of rigidity by using an array of stiff, yet lightweight materials throughout the body.
- 48 percent of the ZDX body structure is formed from advanced high-strength steel, offering superior rigidity, excellent crashworthiness yet lighter weight than conventional steel. Key areas include the A- and B-pillars, floor sills, roof frame, cross braces, and floor crossmembers.
- About five percent of the ZDX body components are lightweight aluminum. This includes the hood, instrument panel support and other areas where less weight is required and the strength of steel is not imperative.
- Instrument testing revealed that the "tailgate ring" (the structure surrounding the tailgate) is extremely important for handling, stability and ride, so this area is particularly rigid, providing the rear suspension with a solid mounting structure that nets improved handling precision.
Smooth & Quiet Ride
The ZDX delivers a smooth Grand Touring ride, in which long distances are traversed in uncompromising comfort. An essential component to the experience is the vehicle's supremely quiet operation at high speed. Engineers attacked noise at the source, inside and out, to reduce the need for insulation materials.
- Special composite seals in the exterior door panels reduce objectionable sound-up to five decibels on some roads.
- Special acoustic windshield glass is tuned specifically to attenuate wind-noise frequencies, helping to place the ZDX at the top of its class in wind-noise performance.
- A unique carpet and padding system further reduces noise intrusion.
- The rear suspension mounts are attached directly to the body for greater rigidity and reduced vibration.
- The front and rear subframes are stiffer, which allow for softer mounting bushings and a further reduction in noise and vibration.
- To diminish the "drumming" noises inherent in hatchback body styles, insulating materials were used in critical areas, including those on the front bulkhead, the floor, side body, doors and roof.
Battery
Battery Management System
The ZDX has a Battery Management System that can help prevent the inconvenience of a dead or weak battery. The system initially warns you through the MID screen when it detects the battery getting weak and will shut down accessories if it detects the battery may soon be too weak to start the engine.
- 27 Based on 2013 EPA mileage ratings. Use for comparison purposes only. Your actual mileage will vary, depending on how you drive and maintain your vehicle.
Lighting & Visibility
Multi-view Rear Camera
The ZDX comes with a rearview camera that automatically produces a display in the navigation screen when "reverse" is engaged. There are three separate views, allowing you to select the one that best serves your situation. You can change the views by pressing the navigation system's "Enter" control.
- The normal view is ideal to spot items behind the ZDX that are too low to be seen through the rear window.
- The wide angle view shows a 170° view behind the ZDX, which is perfect for spotting approaching vehicles or pedestrians when backing out of parking spots.
- The top-down view is useful for parallel parking or lining up a trailer hitch.
- Yellow guidelines help guide your trajectory and judge distances. The closest guideline indicates clearance for opening the power tailgate.
Blind Spot Information System
The ZDX is equipped with Acura's blind spot information system that can assist you when making lane changes.
- If the system detects a vehicle in an adjacent lane in the ZDX's "alert zone" (approximately from the rear half of the ZDX to half a car-length back), an indicator will appear on that side's windshield pillar.
- The pillar light will flash if the driver activates the turn signal in the direction where a vehicle has been detected.
- In order to avoid disturbing the driver or passengers, no sounds are emitted by the system.
- The indicators only light up when the ZDX is traveling above 6 mph, so they won't come on when parking, at stop lights, or in stop-and-go traffic.
HID Headlights
The ZDX is equipped with Xenon High-Intensity Discharge (HID) headlights for the low beams.
- Xenon lights cast a whiter and brighter light for improved clarity.
- The HID lenses allow a more precise beam pattern that increases road visibility without blinding oncoming drivers.
Front and Rear Parking Sensors
The front and rear sensors help you parallel park and maneuver the ZDX with poise when confronted with tight spaces.
- Sensors in the front and rear alert the driver to the presence of objects detected behind and in front of the vehicle by audible beeps heard in the cabin.
- The beeping increase in frequency as the vehicle gets closer, allowing the driver to determine the distance to the detected object.
Auto Dimming Folding Side Mirrors
The thoughtfully designed side mirrors on the ZDX are a testament to Acura's commitment to driver convenience and awareness.
- The side mirrors will dim automatically when faced with a bright light after dark. This prevents the driver from being distracted by the reflections of bright headlights as they appear through the mirrors.
- A button on the left side of the dash will fold the mirrors back, making it easier for the ZDX to fit in tight parking spaces or inside garages. You can set the mirrors to automatically extend out again when the ZDX is started.
- While the mirrors are mostly flat, the outer section is convex for enhanced visibility.
Controls
Power Tailgate
As you approach the rear of the ZDX, press a button on the key fob and the tailgate will automatically lift, or you can press a button on the tailgate itself. When you're finished loading or unloading, just press the button again and it will power down and latch.
- When you've come to a stop in the ZDX and are ready to unload, just push a button on the dash near the door, and the tailgate will be open by the time you get there.
- In the event of a power failure, the tailgate can be raised and lowered manually.
- When opening or closing, the tailgate will automatically reverse itself if it encounters any obstruction.
Seating
Front Seats
The driver and front passenger of the ZDX are each enveloped in a cocoon of soft leather that sweeps from the door, across the dash and flows down the center console. The front seats complete the circle with the same fine leather. And that's just the beginning of the sumptuous ZDX seating experience.
- The driver enjoys a 10-way adjustable power seat, including a power lumbar support.
- The front passenger is given similar consideration with an 8-way power adjustable seat.
- The front seats have six levels of personal climate controls, including three levels of heating and three levels of cooling.
- The seats cool by drawing air across occupants and into the perforations in the leather, allowing you to quickly reach your desired comfort level.
- For supreme convenience, the 2-driver automatic memory system is designed to record preferences for the driver's seat, steering wheel and side mirror positions as well as climate control and audio presets.
- Advanced seat frames and power adjustment features help reduce flex in seat movement, imparting a stable and substantial feel.
Rear Seats
The rear seats are covered in the same luxuriously soft leather as the rest of the cabin. There's room for three passengers, with the outboard seats providing optimal comfort.
- When the middle space in the second row is unoccupied, a center armrest can be folded down, providing a soft cushion for two arms, as well as the retractable dual cup holders.
- The adjustable headrests tilt down to improve rear visibility when seats are unoccupied.
- The seatbacks fold 60/40 to form a near-flat floor for increased cargo space.
Storage
Cargo Area
Open the power tailgate and you'll find a meticulously designed and lavishly finished cargo area. Your belongings will never have it so good.
- Loop carpeting covers the floor, sides and rear seatbacks.
- A brushed metal door-pull on the floor gives access to a wide, hidden cargo area. Gas struts keep the access panel open as you load items.
- Additional brushed metal door-pulls on each side of the cargo area open panels that reveal additional hidden storage areas. The panels can be removed to widen the overall storage space for items such as golf bags.
- Chrome-finished cargo loops at each corner allow you to help keep cargo secure.
- There's over 27 cu.ft. of storage behind the back seats.
- Lowering the 60/40 split rear seatbacks provides a near-flat floor and increases the cargo space to over 69.647 cu. ft.
Cabin Storage
The driver has four separate storage areas within reach, and passengers have plenty of space for their travel accoutrements, making long drives comfortable for everyone.
- A sliding tray at the front of the center armrest provides a perfect place where a small item such as an iPod® can be easily accessed or hidden from view, even while it's connected to the USB port or auxiliary audio input.
- A button on either side opens the main center console storage area, which is perfect for storing CDs and other personal items.
- A drop-down pocket for sunglasses can be accessed overhead.
- The door panel features map storage and an area suitable for a water bottle.
- The glove box lowers with an elegant dampening movement and has a shelf to hold the owner's manual and other documents.
Climate Control
GPS-linked Temperature Control
The ZDX provides a dual-zone, dual-mode automatic climate control system that allows the driver and front passenger to create their own microclimates. When direct sunlight is warming one side of the cabin, the system is aware of it and will automatically adjust the heating or cooling to maintain the desired temperature.
- A solar sensor measures the sun's intensity to determine its impact on interior temperature while the Acura Navigation System's10 GPS receiver tracks the sun's position relative to the car.
- As you approach the ZDX, it detects which remote you have and will automatically set your preferred climate control settings.
- If alone, you can synchronize both climate zones to a single setting.
- Adjustable vents behind the front center console allow rear passengers to direct and control airflow.
- Almost all climate control functions can be operated by voice commands.
Bluetooth HandsFreeLink
Bluetooth HandsFreeLink
The Bluetooth®11 HandsFreeLink® system works with most Bluetooth-enabled cell phones to let you receive and initiate phone calls through the ZDX audio system without ever taking your hands off the wheel.
- With a compatible phone, a simple one-time pairing process using the navigation screen is all it takes to connect your phone to the car. As long as your phone's Bluetooth is enabled, the car will automatically reconnect your phone without it ever leaving your pocket or purse.
- Whether you initiate or receive a call, the audio system will automatically mute, and you will hear the call through the audio system speakers. By speaking to the windshield, your voice is clearly received through sophisticated directional microphones.

Song By Voice
The Song By Voice® feature uses the Voice Recognition system to help the ZDX driver find music from the hard disc drive or a USB7-connected iPod®8 simply by voicing a preference.
- The system is initialized with either of the commands, "iPod search" or "HDD search," after which you can find your preference by first stating your chosen category, such as: song, artist, album, or genre.
- Follow your category choice by stating your desired music selection. For example, if "Equilibrium" is the title song of an album, the command "Play song "Equilibrium" will play the song, while saying, "Play album "Equilibrium" will play the whole album.
- You can also have the system display lists of artists, albums, and other categories on the navigation screen.
Active Sound Control
Active Sound Control (ASC) can reduce unwanted cabin noise by as much as 10dB, countering it with opposing sound frequencies through the audio system speakers.
- Two microphones monitor specific frequency ranges that contribute to unwanted noise in the cabin.
- The ASC system then creates an inverse waveform which, when run through the audio system speakers, cancels out the undesirable frequencies, even when the audio system is turned off.
- The system is linked to throttle position and engine rpm to provide a quieter cockpit during normal cruising, while allowing the engine's muscular sound to be enjoyed during higher rpm and more spirited driving.

Braking Systems
The ZDX disc brakes are backed up by several sophisticated electronic systems to provide you with enhanced braking abilities under almost any circumstance.
- The anti-lock braking system (ABS) helps you retain steering control in emergency braking by preventing the wheels from locking up, while still letting them achieve their maximum level of stopping power.
- The Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) system uses the ABS system to direct braking power among the four wheels, depending on the vehicle load, to help optimize braking effectiveness.
- The Brake Assist system detects emergency braking by the driver by monitoring the speed at which the brake pedal is depressed and stepping in to ensure the ABS system is activated-terminating immediately upon release of the brake pedal.
Vehicle Stability Assist
The Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®)12 system monitors stability factors to detect oversteer or understeer, and if detected, VSA uses a number of the ZDX systems to remediate the problem.
- The system continually monitors vehicle speed, throttle position, individual wheel speeds, steering angle, lateral G-force, and vehicle yaw rate.
- If potential oversteer or understeer is detected, the system will first use the Super Handling All-Wheel Drive™ (SH-AWD®) to redirect power among the front wheels and each of the rear wheels to maintain stability.
- If using SH-AWD is insufficient, the system will reduce engine torque and use the anti-lock braking system (ABS) to apply brakes to each wheel as needed to help stabilize the vehicle.
- In all cases, VSA response is so quick that the instability may be corrected before the driver even knows it's occurring.
Tire Pressure Monitoring System
Since an under-inflated tire impedes handling and can be a safety hazard, the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) uses pressure sensors mounted in each wheel that send readings to a central electronic control unit. The system then evaluates whether the pressure is up to an acceptable range.
- If a reading is approximately 25% below the recommended level, the ZDX will alert the driver through the Multi-Information Display (MID) located on the instrument panel.
- The under-inflated tire will be indicated, along with the individual pressure, for all four tires.
- The pressure display can be accessed anytime using the MID controls on the steering wheel.
- As useful as TMPS is, it is still recommended that you manually check your tires on a regular basis.
Active Safety
Forward Collision Warning
The Forward Collision Warning system (FCW) alerts you to a potential collision with a vehicle ahead, using both visual and audible warnings.
- The system can detect vehicles directly in front of the car, using a camera mounted between the windshield and the rearview mirror. If the distance to that vehicle is diminishing, the system compares the vehicles' current speeds to determine if a collision may occur.
- To alert the driver to apply the brake pedal, an amber "Brake" message will flash in the Multi-Information Display, and a series of beeps will be emitted.
- To avoid unnecessary warnings, the system will not operate at speeds below 10 mph.
- Drivers can adjust the distance at which the alerts will be triggered by accessing the personal settings section through the Multi-Information Display.
Lane Departure Warning
The Lane Departure Warning system (LDW) is designed to alert the driver when the vehicle unintentionally leaves a clearly designated lane.
- Using the same camera as the FCW system, the system looks for lane markings and, once they're detected, it can determine if the vehicle is about to leave its lane without turn signals engaged.
- The system engages at speeds of 45 miles per hour and above on relatively straight or slightly curved roads.
- If the vehicle begins to cross a lane marking, and the turn signal has not been engaged, the system will flash the LDW indicator on the instrument panel, and an amber Lane Departure message on the Multi-Information Display will sound a series of beeps, alerting the driver to either return to the lane or activate the turn signal.
- The system can be disengaged with the LDW button that's located to the left of the steering column. Upon restarting the car, the system will always default to the "On" position.
Body Structure
Advanced Compatibility Engineering
Acura utilizes Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure to enhance occupant protection and crash compatibility in frontal crashes.
- The ACE design utilizes a network of connected structural elements to distribute crash energy more evenly throughout the front of the vehicle.
- This enhanced frontal crash energy management helps to reduce the forces transferred to the passenger compartment and can help to more evenly disperse the forces transferred to the other vehicles in a crash.
Restraint Systems
Airbag System
The ZDX is equipped with a sophisticated 6-airbag system, which includes two front airbags and two front-side airbags, and two side curtain airbags that provide coverage for the front and outboard rear seats.
- The front airbags are equipped with two-stage, multiple-threshold inflators. One or both airbags will be deployed only in the event of a sufficient frontal impact. If deployed, these airbags are capable of being inflated at different rates depending on crash severity, seat belt usage and/or other factors. Frontal airbags are designed to supplement the seat belts to help reduce the likelihood of head and upper body injuries in frontal crashes.
- Sensors in the front passenger seat determine if it is empty or if the passenger is too small for the passenger's front airbag to deploy safely, and disengage the front passenger's front airbag, if necessary.
- The Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS) uses sensors in the front passenger seatback to determine the height and position of the passenger. The system will deactivate the passenger's front-side airbag if a child or small-statured adult is leaning into the airbag deployment path.
- In a side impact, side curtain airbags deploy downward from just above the doorframes on the impacted side to help protect both front and outboard rear seat occupants.
Seat Belts & Active Front Head Restraints
All five seating positions in the ZDX have 3-point belts and head restraints. The front seats have load-limiting tensioners and active head restraints.
- Tensioners react in the first milliseconds of a sufficient impact to automatically tighten the belts and help hold the individual in position against the seatback.
- To help prevent the tensioners from causing undue pressure on the chest, load limiters slightly relieve belt tension, as needed, to help soften the force.
- In a rear-end collision, when the front seat occupant's body is pushed against the seatback, the pressure forces the head restraint upward and forward to reduce the gap between the occupant's head and the head restraint.
- Impact forces on the neck and spine are diminished, helping reduce the likelihood of whiplash injuries.
Child Safety
Child Safety
The ZDX has several features addressing child safety, from sophisticated airbag sensors to anchors that secure child seats.
- The Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS) utilizes sensors in the front passenger's seatback to detect if the occupant is a child or small-statured adult. If such an occupant is leaning into the side airbag's deployment path, the side airbag will be deactivated until they resume a more upright position.
- All windows and the moonroof have an auto-reverse feature that can reverse their closing if an obstacle is encountered.
- LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren) anchors plus upper-tether anchors in the rear seat allow LATCH-compatible child seats to be installed in the outboard positions without the use of seat belts.
Security
Security System
Like every Acura model, the ZDX comes equipped with a security system. In the event of a break-in, the following events will occur:
- The ignition will be disabled.
- The horn will sound.
- The lights will flash.
- 12 VSA is not a substitute for safe driving. It cannot correct the vehicle's course in every situation or compensate for reckless driving. Control of the vehicle always remains with the driver.
